This is not how you’d expect most letters about fitness to begin.
I’m going to start at 17:55pm, 11 years ago on a hot Friday afternoon in the city of London.
While sat at my overly cramped desk in Moorgate, slightly the worse for wear after another long boozy lunch, I was once again counting down the last few minutes of the work week.
There was only one thing on my mind. Getting back to the pub as soon as the clock hit 6pm!
After all, it was the begininng of the weekend and the sun was out.
I had arranged to meet my girlfriend a few hours later when she finished her shift.
That gave me enough time for a couple more drinks and some tasty pub grub.
Her text arrived to say she was nearby. As I crossed the road I could see a look of disgust appear on her face.
"You look like a slob, a fat slob" she blurted out.
This was the middle of the city, at peak time, on a hot summers evening. There were people EVERYWHERE.
"Look at your belly hanging out of your shirt, it's gross!"
It didn't end there.
"When are you going to do something about this. Do you think I like having to look at this every day?"
My face went as red as my socks. (don't judge, it's part of the investment banker uniform!)
My girlfriend decided she couldn't face looking at me that evening so she met a girlfriend instead.
I went home and fell asleep.
I was a 30-year-old man with zero energy. When most people were out having a good time on a Friday night, I was crashed out on the sofa by 9pm.
When I woke the following morning her words were still running around in my head.
After putting it off for so long I knew it was time for me to weigh myself.
It wasn't pretty. I had put on 3 stone in just under a year!
The long hours, nights out, boozy lunches, eating on the go, and vending machine visits had all taken their toll.
